  • Next Show April 26

Our next show is Saturday April 26. We are showing this film. It’s another 1980s movie – this one about Jerry Mitchell, a nerdy high-school newspaper kid who is asked to do a piece on the new guy at school. Buddy Revell is a hulking bad-ass with an infamous reputation. When Jerry accidentally steps over the line by touching Buddy’s arm, the fight is on for three-o’clock. Jerry must find a way to deal with it.

Keep your fingers crossed for good weather – you never know about this time of year. The show will be in the same place and about the same time.

Just as a reminder – we send out announcements about shows through “The List.” Please go HERE and sign up if you haven’t done so.

    Hope to see you there!

The show on April 19 was a great opener for the 2008 season. There was a decent turnout considering the expectation of a passing spring storm and the cool conditions. I hope everyone enjoyed the movie. I know there are some corny parts to it but that’s part of what makes 80s movies so great. Still, I have to say, after watching the climbing sequence again I am impressed that it all was accurate – there were not any shortcuts that Hollywood-ized the climbing and made it unreal. Except I did notice when Alan was hanging in mid-air he had two opposed carabiners clipped to a single non locking carabiner – what was the point in that?

Another thing that I was even more impressed by in watching the movie some 15 years later was the final canoing scene. The cinematography was pretty amazing and those must have been class 6 rapids.

The new screen worked wonderfully. I think the image looked SO much better on the flat surface versus seeing it on the curvature of the silos like last year. Still watching it on the silos gave the experience a unique feel.

One more thing about the show – I usually see who donates cash to the donation jar (or in this case, the donation box) and make a point to thank them but I didn’t see who donated this time – you guys must have been sneaky or I must have been busy. So to those of you who donated cash – Thank You very much. I sincerely appreciate it.

  • First Show of 2008 – Saturday, April 12

Am I excited to announce the first Renegade Picture Show of this season will take place on Saturday, April 12 at dark. What time exactly? Well, we don’t know exactly – but I would imagine 8:00ish. For the first show of the new season we are showing one of my childhood favorites. An outdoor trip leader who takes a group of boys in the wilderness and through the trials and tribulations of the wild hopes to teach them, in his own way, a little bit about themselves. A the city boy who is uncomfortable in the wild and has a different way of doing things. The two clash and in the end….well…you’ll just have to see the movie.

The movie came out in 1987 so it has all the typical qualities of an 80s film. One of the best parts is that it actually has a factually accurate depiction of rock climbing – though not a very long scene.

So let’s go through how this show works again – just as a refresher for the new year AND as a primer to those who will be joining us for the first time. First of all, the movie is free. But we graciously accept donations to pay for the movie license, materials, equipment and upkeep. The movie is projected onto the back of a building. Sound is transmitted through an FM transmitter and can be heard through speakers that we will set up and through your car stereo or a portable radio. Prior to the feature presentation we have music and a slideshow, then some short films, old drive-in ads, whatever I happen to find and put together, really.

Everyone should bring something to sit in or on – namely, a blanket or chairs – unless you prefer the tailgate of your truck, back of your SUV, or front seat of your sedan. Bring some delicious snacks and beverages of your choosing. Maybe bring some to share too.

This is a community gathering and is geared towards having fun and enjoying a movie together in a unique setting. Sure it’s art – it’s an interactive experience.

This year we have a *slightly* new location for the show. Follow the same directions as before – but this year the screen is on the back of the building just east of the silos. And the business is now called Rocktown Climbing Gym. This Google map should get you (close) to here.

  • New Stuff

It is official. We received the movie license for 2008 which means that in order to get our money’s worth we are going to have to show a butt-load of films. I am in the process – though early in the process I must admit – of putting together the list of movies and a schedule for this season. At this point all I know is that the first show is going to be towards the end of March – and hopefully on a dry Friday or Saturday (probably Saturday) evening.

I am interested in what everyones’ suggestions are for movies this season. What would you like to see on the big screen (for free)?

Speaking of the big screen…I’ve got some bad news. Actually, it’s sort of good news bad news. But we’ll start with the bad news. The bad news is that our movie screen on the side of the silos now has a metal cable tray running directly through it courtesy of a certain wireless cell phone company. Not to name names but it begins with an A & ends with a T. So the old screen is toast. It was fun while it lasted.

Now the good news: we are going to have another screen just next door on another building – this one with a flat surface! Now for more bad news – I still have to paint a screen on the building. Damn. The last one was a lot of work.

But I think the new screen, once in place, will be awesome.

Now let’s brainstorm together. For the first movie of the season I want a blockbuster – something to kick the season off with a bang. Something that screams of Hollywood, and drive-ins, and everything that makes movies great. The epitome of the film experience. What is that movie? Or maybe we need something that relates to our new home – maybe a film that is climbing related? That narrows down the options quite a bit.
