Renegade Picture Show – New Screen Premiere – June 30th, 2012

Greeting fellow Renegade Picture Show movie-goers! Saturday, June 30th, 2012 is a special day in many ways. It is the first show this season – and our 21st show over the course of 6 years running. We’ll be celebrating the day and enjoying an evening of film in our BRAND NEW VENUE and on a much, much larger and even more awesome screen. The new screen is located on the opposite end of the same building where the old screen was painted. This is the third generation of painted movie screens and each one just gets bigger and better. This one all but knocks it out of the park. Coupled with an incredible grassy sitting area, this should be quite an enjoyable spot to watch a film. Someone already pointed out the imperfections of the building and how it’s not entirely flat – my response is that it only adds character and is part of this style of movie-going experience where we have to make do with what surface we have to project on. In actuality, most of the imperfections of the surface should vanish the moment the film comes on and you are immersed in the story – at least that’s what we hope for, right?

So now we come to the film of the evening….what to show on such a night? It’s a grand decision and one that a conclusion has not been formulated for. I haven’t decided. Stay tuned for that announcement later on. An official invite will be sent out to everyone on THE LIST – so sign up for that if you haven’t already.

But do mark your calendars for Saturday, June 30th – the show will begin at dark – most likely 9 pm these days. And feel free to arrive early to get a good spot, hang out, etc.

As always, there is no charge for the show – this is a free event. Of course donations are much appreciated.

  • RPS 20 Show Report – Reel Rock Film Tour 2011

RPS 20 Show Report – Reel Rock Film Tour 2011

Last Saturday we hosted the 2011 Reel Rock Film Tour as our 20th Renegade Picture Show. Backwoods sponsored the event – which was really cool of them. It was held at Rocktown on the back of the building where there is a large white screen painted – same place that many other RPSs have been shown. In addition to the film there was a band before the show. This gave me the opportunity to have to build a stage. The band, Sanburke (I think they were called) did a great job. We had a sizable turnout for the show – not sure how many people but I would estimate it was on the order of 60-75. The weather was beautiful, the films were stellar, and overall it appeared that audience really enjoyed the experience. As far as the technical stuff, the sound was superb, the projector (the same one I’ve used for 5 years running) continues to beam big and bright without a hiccup, and the playing of the show was smooth. For future plans, I’m working on trying to pull-off some sort of Halloween spectacle – not sure what it will consist of yet – but I have a few more days to figure it out.

  • RPS 19 Show Report – Super 8 Film Night

RPS 19 Show Report – Super 8 Film Night

Our Super 8 film night last Saturday evening was great. We watched a total of 17 short films ranging in length from about 2 minutes to 20 minutes. The program was divided into two half with the first half consisting of a number of Super 8 films I’ve found online. After a brief intermission we screened the second half of the program which featured shorts from the 2010 Cambridge International Super 8 Film Festival. Overall the response was good and I think people really enjoyed most (if not all) of the films.

The next show – our 20th – will have to be a good one. I’m thinking about what to do. Ideas?

Super 8 Film Night! At Silo Art Space – Rocktown – RPS#19

Renegade Picture Show & Aaron W. Gibson present an evening of Super 8 Film Shorts at Rocktown Climbing Gym this coming Saturday. The films vary from far and wide – several were selected as “Best of Fest” from the 2010 Super 8 Festival in Cambridge, England.

The films vary widely in terms of genre; foreign, quirky, dark, sentimental, experimental…some arre just plain strange. Some are black and white, some color – appearance and… mood all differ. They all have on thing in common – all were shot in the Super 8 film format.

This is a RARE opportunity to see the state of Super 8 filmmaking today and experience stories told across the globe in a variety of ways.

This will be the FIRST showing of its type for Renegade and will take place indoors. Yes, indoors at Rocktown, in our Silo Art Space area.

Hope you all can be there. We’ll do our best to accommodate.

The show will begin approximately 8:30 pm.
    A personal note from Aaron:

“I’ve selected films which explore the variety, experiences, and stories as told through Super 8 filmmaking. If you are looking for something truly artistic and vastly outside the “norm” of typical Hollywood movies – this night is for you! Super 8 film shorts, and shorts in general often present themselves more as anecdotes rather than complete stories or thoughts. The best ones leave you wanting more, asking questions, wondering what-if, and intrigued by what was just witnessed. For this reason (and many others) some people steer away from shorts or quickly proclaim one as good or bad. My feeling about this has always been, to say a film is “good” or “bad” is short-sighted – we must first put it in context, reorient our own perspective and ask the question again. And again. Sometimes we have to accept that maybe we just don’t understand. And that’s okay.”

A word of caution: Some of the films may explore themes of a more mature/adult nature and all may not be appropriate for age 13 and under – I think I can safely say this will be PG-13.
